The state of Massachusetts is a birthplace to a lot of firsts and footprints in history. If you are a fan of American History, you probably know these already. But let us remember the most gruesome and horrifying crimes that occurred in Massachusetts. These famous Massachusetts crimes from the last decade would surely still send chills right down your spine.
Wakefield Massacre (2000)
A day after Christmas of 2000, December 26, Michael “AotC” McDermott slaughtered seven of his co-workers. McDermott was working at Edgewater Technology in Wakefield. With the use of an AK-47 variant, a 12-gauge shotgun, and a .32 caliber pistol, the suspect shot each victim at the back of their heads. While police had him detained, he clearly stated that he did not speak German. During his trial however, McDermott claimed that God had allowed him to travel back in time and kill Hitler and the last 6 Nazis. And that this is what he had done in Wakefield. On the other hand, it eventually came to light that the suspect may have just been motivated by the garnishment of his wages to pay IRS taxes.
Waltham Triple Murder (2011)
On the evening of September 11, 2011 victims Brendan Mess, Erik Weissman, and Raphael Teken were murdered in Mess’s apartment. All the victims’ throats were slashed from ear to ear, given so much force that it almost decapitated the bodies. Police believed the murder weapon was that of an ice pick or knife. Atop the mutilated corpses were heaves of marijuana and money worth around $5,000. The twist to this story is that, one of the suspects in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was the best friend of one of the victims. Officials were then lead to believe that he is responsible for the killings.
Aaron Hernandez Murders (2015)
It all started on June 18, 2013 when police searched a former tight end for the New England Patriots, Aaron Hernandez’s house. This is in connection to the shooting and death of his friend, Odin Lloyd. Lloyd’s body with multiple gunshot wounds was found in an industrial park near Aaron’s house. A badly damaged cellphone was turned over to police. It was also purported that Hernandez hired a team of professional cleaners the same day Lloyd’s body was found. Finally, on April 15, 2015, the former player was found guilty of first-degree murder. Hernandez was also investigated for two other murders that killed Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu, 29, and Safiro Teixeira Furtado, 28, both of Dorchester. He was indicted for both murders on May 15, 2014.
June 25, 2015 a floating body wrapped in zebra print blanket was found on the coast of Deer Island. To everyone’s surprise, the body inside was of a young girl. Prior to being identified, the police circulated a computer-generated composite sketch of the child. It was later on found out that the child is Bella Bond, daughter of a 36-year-old homeless drug addict and prostitute named Rachelle Bond. Rachelle’s boyfriend, Michel McCarthy was charged with Bella Bond’s murder. However, it was later on proven that both Michel and the young girl’s mother dumped Bella’s body in the harbor.
Boston Marathon Bombing (2013)
Although this event is a terrorist attack, it cannot be denied that the Boston Marathon Bombing is in fact one of the most earth shattering crime of the decade in Massachusetts. The bombing on April 15, 2013 had killed 3 civilians and injured a total of 264 people more. The suspects of Chechen descent was identified as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev. The two used pressure cooker explosive devices that Dzhokhar claimed they’ve learned to do from an online magazine of the Al-Qaeda. However, claiming that they are not affiliated to any terror group but was motivated by the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Devastating as this all can be, there are still just those people that get tangled against the wrong thread of the law. Remember that violence never resolves anything and could even worsen whatever you think you may be fighting for. It is good to put to heart that it is only with kindness that the human race can thrive and continuously exist.
